Best Lion's Mane Supplement UK (2026): Liquid Extracts Compared on Ratio, Organic and Real Cost

06.10.2026

By Gabriel Tsiattalou, Founder & COO of Manapura. Prices and product specifications correct as of 5th October 2026.

Lion's Mane is one of the most popular functional mushrooms in the UK - renowned for it’s benefits for focus and memory. Liquid extracts (tinctures) have become one of the main ways people take it.

They are also hard to compare: bottle sizes differ, doses are measured in pipettes or millilitres, and many brands never say how much mushroom went into the bottle. This guide compares three UK Lion's Mane liquid extracts on extraction ratio, how the mushroom is grown and extracted, testing and real cost per month, and is straightforward about what the human research does and doesn't show.

This guide compares liquid extracts only. Capsule and powder products - which are typically imported and hence present far more unknowns regarding their contents - are not covered here.

Quick answer

Look for a Lion's Mane extract that tells you its extraction ratio, uses the fruiting body rather than mycelium grown on grain, and can guarantee the source of it’s raw mushroom products. The ratio matters because it tells you how much mushroom went into each millilitre of liquid: 1:3 means 1g of mushroom for every 3ml of liquid, and 1:4 means 1g for every 4ml, so 1:3 is the more concentrated of the two.

Manapura's Organic Lion's Mane states a 1:3 ratio, dual (water and ethanol) extraction and fruiting body only. It is certified organic by the Soil Association (through its UK supplier), and the mushrooms are grown and extracted in the UK. Of the three brands compared, it states the most concentrated ratio. Bristol Fungarium is the closest competitor on credentials and states 1:4. Lifecykel does not state a ratio. Per gram of mushroom, Manapura is also the better value of the brands that state one (about £2.28 against £2.80).

What to look for in a Lion's Mane supplement

Lion's Mane extracts vary widely in what they contain. Before comparing brands, here is what actually matters:

  • Extraction ratio: A stated ratio (such as 1:3 or 1:4) is the only way to compare how much mushroom is in two different liquids. If a brand doesn't state one, you can't tell how concentrated the product is. A lower second numbers mean more mushroom per millilitre.

  • Extraction method: Dual extraction uses both hot water and alcohol. The generally stated rationale is that water captures water-soluble compounds such as beta-glucans, while alcohol captures alcohol-soluble compounds such as hericenones.

  • Fruiting body or mycelium: The fruiting body is the part of the mushroom you would eat. Some products use mycelium grown on grain, which can carry leftover grain starch. This starch artificially increases the active components in many test - so you are not likely be getting what the label is stating. Look for a brand that says it contains fruiting body.

  • Organic and origin: Organic certification, from a body such as the Soil Association, covers how the mushrooms are grown. Check the certificate is current and that it covers the producer of the mushrooms. Many supplements don't say where their mushrooms were grown at all, so a brand that names a UK farm and a UK extraction site is giving you something you can check.

  • Real cost per month: Bottle sizes and doses vary, so the headline price tells you little. The fair comparison is cost per month at the dose the brand itself recommends.

Where the evidence on Lion's Mane actually stands

Lion's Mane has more human research behind it than many newer longevity ingredients, but the studies are small and the results are modest. A 2025 systematic review in Frontiers in Nutrition identified five randomised controlled trials and three pilot trials of Hericium erinaceus. It reported a combined weighted average increase of 1.17 points on the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) from one randomised trial.

Two of the individual trials show the range. In a 2009 double-blind trial in Japan, 30 adults aged 50 to 80 with mild cognitive impairment took twelve 250mg tablets (about 3g) of Lion's Mane a day for 16 weeks. Their scores were higher than the placebo group's at weeks 8, 12 and 16, and fell back after the supplement was stopped. In a 2023 Northumbria University pilot study of 41 healthy adults aged 18 to 45, a single 1.8g dose was followed by faster Stroop task performance at 60 minutes, while a trend towards lower subjective stress after 28 days did not reach significance. The authors noted null and limited negative findings.

One point is worth being direct about: these trials used grams of whole dried mushroom, not liquid extracts. The same is likely true of liquid extracts, which is why a stated extraction ratio matter.

How the leading UK Lion's Mane liquid extracts compare

We compared Manapura against two other UK Lion's Mane liquid extracts. Every figure below was checked directly against each brand's own UK product page and store data on 5th October 2026, including subscription prices.

Brand Extraction ratio Extraction and mushroom part Organic and origin Dose and bottle supply Testing / Certification Cost per month
Manapura Organic Lion's Mane (50ml) 1:3 (stated). About 16.7g of mushroom per 50ml bottle, or about £2.28 per gram Dual (water and alcohol). Fruiting body only Certified organic by the Soil Association (via UK supplier). Grown and extracted in the UK 1-2 pipettes a day (1 pipette = 1ml).
Up to 50-day supply
cGMP, ISO 9001. Lab result to be published shortly £38.00 per bottle one-time buy.
£22.80/month of 1:3 extraction ratio. About £2.28 per gram.
Based on 1ml a day (50-day bottle).
Lifecykel Lion's Mane Mushroom Extract (60ml) Not stated. Strength unknown. Double (water and ethanol). Ingredients list fruit body; its FAQ says fruiting bodies and mycelium No organic claim found. Made in Australia and the USA 2ml a day. 60ml = 30 servings Every batch third-party tested (stated); lab reports page; Informed Sport certified £34.95/month one-time buy.
£34.95/month at stated dose (2ml) a day.
Price per gram not known, as strength not openly disclosed.
Bristol Fungarium Organic Lion's Mane Tincture (50ml) 1:4 (stated: 1g mushroom to 4ml). About 12.5g of mushroom per 50ml bottle, or about £2.80 per gram Triple extraction (alcohol and hot water). Fruiting body Soil Association organic. Farmed in Somerset, UK 1-2ml a day.
Up to 50-day supply
Every batch independently lab tested £35.00 per bottle one-time: £21.00/month of 1:4 extraction ratio. Hence £2.80 per gram.
Based on 1ml a day (50-day bottle).

Cost per month is calculated at the dose each brand itself recommends, using how many days each bottle lasts at that dose, and for Manapura and Bristol Fungarium is shown at both ends of their 1-2ml dose range (one Manapura pipette is 1ml). Lifecykel recommends a single 2ml serving, so one figure is shown per bottle size. Prices checked on 5th October 2026 and may be subject to change. GMP = Good Manufacturing Practice. cGMP = current Good Manufacturing Practice.

Three things stand out. First, the extraction ratio is the most useful number on any of these pages, and it's missing from one of the three brands. Manapura states the strongest (1:3) and Bristol Fungarium states 1:4, which means Manapura's liquid is more concentrated per millilitre (roughly 333mg of mushroom per ml against 250mg per ml). Lifecykel doesn't state one, so how concentrated its extract is entirely unknown.

Second, Bristol Fungarium and Manapura are closely matched on credentials: both say they are Soil Association organic and UK-grown, and both use the fruiting body.

Third, on price, it helps to compare like for like. Per gram of mushroom, using each stated ratio, Manapura works out cheapest - at about £2.28 /gram against about £2.80 / gram for Bristol Fungarium.

Lifecykel recommends a 2ml serving and works out at £34.95 a month on its 60ml bottle, but with no stated ratio you can't tell how much mushroom you are getting for it. And it contains mycelium, not just fruiting body.

The brands reviewed, in detail

Manapura Organic Lion's Mane

Manapura's Organic Lion's Mane is a 50ml dual liquid extract made from the fruiting body of Lion's Mane mushrooms, in water and organic ethanol, with a stated 1:3 extraction ratio. The Manapura Trust Centre shows it is certified organic by the Soil Association through its UK supplier, is grown and extracted in the UK, free of fillers, binders and synthetic additives. It product is finished in cGMP and ISO 9001 certified facilities, and is vegan and gluten-free, and is taken as 1-2 pipettes (1ml each) a day, under the tongue or in a drink. The product currently has 29 customer reviews.

It is priced at at the cheapest per gram of mushrooms of those where the mushroom quantity is stated.

Lifecykel Lion's Mane Mushroom Extract

Lifecykel's extract is made in its own labs in Australia and the USA using what it calls a double extraction process (water and ethanol). It also contains Kakadu plum as a natural flavour. Its page does not state an extraction ratio. The ingredients list the fruit body, while the brand's FAQ says its extracts use both fruiting bodies and mycelium. The recommended serving is 2ml a day, so the 60ml bottle (£34.95) is 30 servings, and publishes a lab reports page, and is Informed Sport certified. There is no organic claim on its product page.

Bristol Fungarium Organic Lion's Mane Tincture

Bristol Fungarium farms and formulates its own Lion's Mane in Somerset, from a strain it cloned from mushrooms. It states a 1:4 ratio (1g of mushrooms to 4ml), triple extraction with alcohol and hot water, and Soil Association organic certification. A 50ml bottle is £35.00, the recommended dose is 1-2ml a day (do not exceed 3ml), and a bottle is up to a 50-day supply.

It is slighty more expensive than Manapura at cost per gram of mushrooms.

What is Lion's Mane, and what is it studied for?

Lion's Mane (Hericium erinaceus) is an edible mushroom with long shaggy spines, used in traditional East Asian medicine and cooking - and is now one of the most researched functional mushrooms. It contains compounds that have attracted research interest, including hericenones from the fruiting body and erinacines from the mycelium, which have been studied in cell and animal work for their effects on nerve growth factor.

In people, research has looked at memory, focus and mood, mainly in small trials, as set out above. Our guide to Lion's Mane benefits goes through that research in more depth.

What does extraction ratio mean on a Lion's Mane tincture?

The extraction ratio compares the amount of mushroom used to the amount of liquid it ends up in. A 1:3 ratio means 1g of mushroom for every 3ml of liquid. A 1:4 ratio means 1g in 4ml, and 1:10 means 1g in 10ml, so the smaller the second number, the more mushroom per millilitre. A 50ml bottle at 1:3 corresponds to around 16.7g of mushroom, and at 1:4 to 12.5g, if the ratio is by dry weight.

Ratio is not the whole story. It doesn't say which part of the mushroom was used, or how it was extracted, for example. But it is the one number that lets you compare strength, and a brand that doesn't state it is asking you to take the concentration on an assumed trust.

Lion's Mane tincture or powder: why extraction matters

Most Lion's Mane on the market comes as a powder or capsule. Two things are worth knowing before you choose between that and a liquid extract.

Starch and mycelium on grain. The first is what the powder is made from. Some powders are made from the fruiting body. Others are made from mycelium grown on grain, and when the mycelium is not separated from the grain it grew on, leftover grain starch can make up a large share of the powder instead of mushroom. That is why a brand that says "fruiting body only" is telling you something useful. Manapura's Organic Lion's Mane is made from fruiting body only, and Bristol Fungarium also uses the fruiting body.

Cell walls and absorption. The second is how much of the mushroom your body can absorb. Mushroom cell walls are made largely of chitin, which people digest poorly, and the usual explanation for extracting with hot water and alcohol is that it breaks into those cell walls so compounds such as beta-glucans can be released and concentrated. That is the rationale for a dual extract, and is a reasonable mechanism.

Origin is the third difference you can check. Manapura's mushrooms are grown on a UK farm and the extract is made in the UK, so where the mushroom came from and how it was processed is known. Many mushroom supplements, powders included, don't state where their mushrooms were grown.

How much Lion's Mane should you take?

The three brands recommend 1-2ml a day (Bristol Fungarium), 2ml a day (Lifecykel) or 1-2 pipettes of 1ml each (Manapura). The human trials above used large amounts of whole dried mushroom: about 3g a day in the 2009 trial and 1.8g in the 2023 study.

Lion's Mane tinctures can contain alcohol, are intended for healthy adults and are not recommended in pregnancy or breastfeeding. Speak to a healthcare professional first if you are taking medication or managing a health condition.

The bottom line

Lion's Mane is one of the most-researched functional mushrooms. Transparency is very important in an industry that is new and under regulated: does the brand say how much mushroom is in the bottle, and which part of the mushroom it uses, and how it is grown?

On those measures, Manapura states the most concentrated ratio of the three brands (1:3), which also makes it the better value per gram of mushroom of the two brands that state a ratio, and states dual extraction, fruiting body only and UK-grown organic ingredients. Bristol Fungarium states 1:4, organic and UK-farmed credentials. Lifecykel is the best known, but does not state a ratio, so its concentration cannot be compared with the other two, and we found no organic claim on its page.

FAQs

What is the best Lion's Mane supplement in the UK?

On stated concentration and price per gram, Manapura's 1:3 is the most concentrated of the three liquid extracts compared here, against 1:4 for Bristol Fungarium and no stated ratio for Lifecykel.

What does a 1:3 extraction ratio mean?

It means 1g of mushroom was used for every 3ml of liquid. It is more concentrated than 1:4 or 1:10, which use more liquid for the same amount of mushroom.

What is dual extraction?

Dual extraction uses both water and alcohol. The generally stated rationale is that water captures water-soluble compounds such as beta-glucans and alcohol captures alcohol-soluble compounds such as hericenones.

How much does a Lion's Mane tincture cost in the UK?

The standard bottles compared here cost £34.95 (Lifecykel 60ml), £35.00 (Bristol Fungarium 50ml) and £38.00 (Manapura 50ml). At each brand's recommended dose, the cost per month ranges from about £21.00 to £45.60 depending on the brand and dose.

Is a Lion's Mane tincture better than capsules?

Tinctures are easy to dose and take, and the extraction ratio lets you compare strength between brands. Capsules often contain whole mushroom powder, are imported, and some powders are made from mycelium grown on grain and can contain a lot of starch.

How long does Lion's Mane take to work?

Research has looked at both acute effects within an hour of a single dose and changes after several weeks of daily use.

Is Lion's Mane safe?

Lion's Mane mushroom is commonly available as a food. Its extracts is widely available as a food supplement in the UK. Tinctures can contain alcohol and are intended for healthy adults. Speak to a healthcare professional before starting if you take medication, have a health condition, or are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Where can I buy an organic Lion's Mane tincture in the UK?

Manapura's Organic Lion's Mane is available directly at manapura.co as a 50ml dual liquid extract with a stated 1:3 ratio, made from the fruiting body.
